Colson's Birth Story

Here is the story of little Colson's arrival on January 16th, 2013.

On Monday the 14th, I went into my doctor and had an exam to find out how much I was dilated. I was about a 2.5 so he wanted to see me again on Thursday before scheduling me to get induced. I was bummed because I wanted it all to be scheduled so I wouldn't be at work when I went into labor but....little Colson just wasn't ready yet!

The next morning I woke up at 3am to what I thought were just bh contractions. I have had them so much during the last month that I thought nothing of it. I laid in bed and was dreading having to go to work with no sleep and was craving Mongolian BBQ! Just at 4:45 my water broke! I was confused because I had just been to the doctor the day before...how could this be happening at just 38 weeks???? So I called my mom just to make sure it was really my water that broke. She was sure of it so........it all began. I then called Heidi, who went into delivery with me to let her know my water had broke and we needed to go to the hospital. I told her not to hurry because I was going to shower and get ready first. 25 minutes later and she is at my house! I got ready, made sure I had everything in my hospital bag, and then my parents showed up ready to go! I really wanted some yogurt and coffee. We went to Banducci's and got some coffee and then to McDonald's for yogurt. :) On the way to the hospital I painted my nails so they would all match my toes! I knew that I needed to do things that would keep me calm or I was going to stress out. I wanted to "enjoy" this experience as much as possible.

We arrived at the hospital at 7:30 and I got checked in. They took me to the back and hooked me up to the monitors. I was having contractions every 2 minutes and could not feel them! But we called my brother and told him that he should hurry because at 2 minutes apart, it could be anytime. He and his girlfriend showed up shortly after. They sent me walking. I walked the halls for an hour before they moved me to my labor and delivery room. When I got to labor and delivery I continued to walk...still nothing! I could not feel my contractions at all! My nurse told me that some women get in the tub and that helps speed up labor so I hopped in! (I packed my pink bikini just in case I ended up in the tub...I'll spare you all the picture!) At this point my brother and Emily decided to head back to Emmett since my labor was at a standstill and I wasn't dilating. My mom and Heidi headed to Whole Foods to grab them some lunch . (I was left starving!) Since I was so bored and kinda jealous that my mom and Heidi got to eat, I had my dad play a nasty trick on them! He called my mom and told her that the tub had worked and that I was having Colson so they had better hurry! She hung up on him before he was able to tell her that she was joking. :) So I called her and told her it was a joke and to take her time. She wasn't very happy with me but I needed some humor after being in labor for so long. I sat in the tub for 1.5 hours before getting out. After I got out I decided to take a nap. I was tired and I knew it was going to be a long night. While I was sleeping they had me hooked up to the monitors and you will never guess.........my labor...........STOPPED! No contractions, no dilating, just stopped! So my mom woke me up at 3:30 and told me that at 4 they were going to start the PIT so I should get up and start walking again. I jumped up and headed for the halls! Heidi and I could give you a personal tour of the second floor. :) At 4:00 my doctor showed up and gave me a check...still nothing! They then started the PIT.

I sat on the birth ball and tried using the bar that goes across your bed to try and get him to move but after 2 hours of still not feeling my contractions they upped the PIT to an 18. Boy oh boy did that work! I started feeling those contractions then. I continued to sit on the birthing ball and had my mom and Heidi in the room coaching me. My mom was awesome and rubbing my back and Heidi held my hand the entire time. They were awesome about keeping me calm and reminding me to rest between contractions. I could not have had better coaches! At 8, I was dilated to almost a 10 and new the night was just beginning. I then asked for an epidural! I was set on having a natural birth but since I had been up since three and was exhausted I knew I needed some assistance. So they gave me my epidural and I slept for two hours! :) My nurse came in at 10 to check on me and I was dilated to a 10 and ready to push. I pushed for two hours. At 12:15 my doctor came back in and delivered Colson! I have never been so in love!

This is a picture of us leaving the hospital.
